18 • THINGS TO DO 2013
I
n some circles, Oregon is known as the
microbrew state, and for good reason. The
state is known as much for its rugged
beauty as its fondness for ales, porters, stouts
and lagers.
More than 100 brewing facilities dot the
state, with more joining the bunch each year.
The Central Oregon area can lay claim to
more than a dozen of those breweries
ranging from the bare-bones tasting room
setting of Boneyard Beer to the recently-
renovated, and nationally-renowned
Deschutes Brewery.
The majority of the brewing facilities
reside in Bend, but Redmond to the north
and Sisters to the west now provide a home
to a facility or two, and Prineville added a
brewery to the list as well.
For any hopheads that find themselves in
Bend, the Bend Ale Trail provides beer
enthusiasts a way to tour nine breweries by
foot or by bike – driving is not
recommended, and taxi services are
available.
Ale trail travelers receive a passport, which
visitors can have stamped at each brewery.
Fill up all nine and earn a special prize.
If you want to liven up your beer-drinking
experience, check out the Cycle Pub of Bend.
The name says it all – riders pedal the 16 seat
bicycle, consuming beer all the while.
