C
entral Oregon features a diverse
history from its Old West pioneers
and Native American heritage, to its
prehistoric roots. Highlighting that history,
the area offers a variety of museums
dedicated to retelling the stories of years
past.
Some facilities provide a glimpse into
the ranching and farming lifestyle of the
pioneer settlers, while others focus on the
Native American heritage and culture.
Other museums, on the other hand, shine a
spotlight on the fossils that serve as
remnants of Central Oregon’s prehistoric
era.
Bowman Museum
Bowman Museum, located in downtown
Prineville (246 North Main St.), is housed in
a building that operated as three different
banks and a title and loan business.
Consequently, the first floor still looks like a
bank and houses a vault.
The museum recently expanded and
remodeled an entire wing, with displays of
Prineville’s compelling history and a
community room and library. In the
original portion of the museum, you can
find displays of historic life in Crook
County lining the walls on both floors .
Venture upstairs to find rooms depicting
life in the 1800s.
The museum began archiving its
artifacts earlier this year, making it easier
for patrons to locate specific pieces of
Crook County history.
