literally be found out your back door,
regardless of the season, and the area that
first comes to mind is Phil’s Trail, just west of
Bend.
The Phil’s Trail network starts at the edge
of Bend, and is a good option for all abilities
from beginners to very experienced riders.
Where Phil’s Trail might have been the
beginning of the mountain biking scene in
Central Oregon, it is far from the end. Trails
abound and more seem to be added every
year.
The Wanoga Trail complex (10 miles
southwest of Bend along the Cascade Lakes
Highway) is Central Oregon’s newest
adoption for a trail network. The next one
would be the Peterson Ridge area, which is
near Sisters.
Although mountain biking is practical
throughout the year, the weather and the
seasons determine where to ride. In general,
winter and early spring translate to mud and
snow for the trails at higher elevations,
forcing people to hit the desert lowlands to
the east.
Horse Ridge (13 miles east of Bend along
U.S. 20) is a popular one in the winter as is
the Cline Butte, Maston area (south and west
of Eagle Crest).
The question is often asked: How many
miles of mountain biking trail are there in
Central Oregon? Depending on the source,
you’re likely to find numbers from 200 to
more than 1,200 miles of trail within two
hours of Bend.
COTA has developed a system on their
website, cotamtb.com, that tells people
when the trails are ready to ride, related to
either snow, mud, or downed trees.
Research the conditions before you go
out. If you do your homework , you’ll have a
great time on the trails.
