Hikers could plan to spend the day at the lake that is believed to
be formed from glacial melt. There is a picnic area and fishing,
swimming, boating, and a lot of wooded areas to explore. Watch out
for mountain bikers and runners who also use the trail.
Black Butte
- about 8 miles northwest of Sisters off of Highway 20
Difficult- 3.8 miles with a significant gain in elevation
To get to the trail head, travel west from Sisters 5 1/2 miles to the
road to Indian Ford Campground. This takes you to Green Ridge
Road 11 and you will travel down it almost four miles to road 1110.
Take this road for a little more than five miles to a parking area.
While children do make this hike, it is very challenging —
especially towards the end, so be cautious if taking young children.
Due to snow, this trail is only open during the summer season and it
can get cold when you get to the top, so be prepared. Despite the
difficulty of this hike, the view and history of the area are worth the
effort. There are two fire lookouts on top that make great photo
opportunities and the view of the Cascade Mountains is
breathtaking.
Bend
Deschutes River South Canyon Trail
- south of Reed Market Road
past the Old Mill Shopping Center
Easy trail: 3 mile loop
This trail is close to town but gives you a feel like you are in the
woods because of the trees and river that meanders next to the trail.
This is a great trail for families and those who want a relaxing walk.
Pilot Butte
— Bend
Moderate/Difficult trail: 1.7 miles
This popular hike takes you up the cinder cone in the middle of
Bend. The road is closed to the summit in the winter months, and
many people hike the road instead of the trail due to the popularity
of the hike. Dogs are allowed if on a leash. The view at the top gives
the hiker a bird's eye view of the Bend area and beyond.
Bridge Creek Trail #24
- Tumalo Falls
Take Skyliner Drive for about 12 miles, turn left after the bridge
onto dirt road and follow Forest Service road 4603 for 2.5 miles to
Tumalo Falls parking lot.
Easy/Moderate due to the length- 6.3 miles
This trail is found in the Tumalo Falls Picnic area and there are
three trails for hikers with some intersecting each other along the
way. Plan for this to be an all day outing.
