kayaking and canoeing as well as for fishing. Motorized boating isn’t
allowed. Fish include cutthroat and brook trout. (44.0173, -121.7409)
Next comes
Hosmer Lake
, a 160-acre gem with both rainbow and
brook trout – and Atlantic Salmon. You read that right. The lake is
fly-fishing only, and boats with electric motors can be used. Hosmer
is known for its large – and intelligent – fish. (43.9723, -121.773)
Both the 300-acre
Big Lava Lake
and 790-acre
Cultus Lake
allow
motors on boats, and also offer rainbow and brook trout. Big Lava
also has chub, and Cultus, mackinaw. (43.9199; -121.7731 and
43.8386, -121.8533)
North Twin Lake
is completely non-motorized, which provides
some measure of quiet while landing rainbow trout. The lake is 130
acres in size, and is probably reached more easily from La Pine.
(43.7279, -121.763)
At 3,000 acres,
Davis Lake
is big, but also very shallow. Rainbow
trout and largemouth bass can be taken on flies only. Motors are
allowed, but this is also a great place to use float tubes. The lake is
known for its trophy rainbow trout. (43.617, -121.848)
Well north of the previous bunch,
Suttle Lake
is located 14 miles
northwest of Sisters, and gives the angler a chance to catch either
kokanee, brown trout, or whitefish – or all three. Its easy access from
U.S. 20, and the fact that it’s open year-round, makes this 250-acre
lake very popular for a variety of activities. (44.4250, -121.7342)
Paulina
(1,300 acres) and
East
(1,050 acres) lakes are located in
the heart of the Newberry Caldera, 13 miles east of U.S. 97, and
within the Newberry National Volcanic Monument. Separated by
only a mile of solid ground, these lakes are known for their large
brown trout. Both also offer rainbow trout and kokanee, and
Atlantic salmon are caught in East Lake. Campgrounds, boat
launches, and a resort are found at each. (43.7225, -121.256 and
43.7299, -121.206)
Reservoirs
Since these reservoirs were developed primarily for irrigation, the
water levels generally decrease throughout the season. Still, great
fishing opportunities abound.
Antelope Reservoir
– southeast of Prineville in the Maury
Mountains – is well off the beaten path, but that doesn’t decrease its
popularity for stocked rainbow trout, especially early in the season.
The 170-acre reservoir has an adjacent Forest Service campground.
