about a half-mile to the rim. From there a
two-mile loop takes off down into the
canyon and along the Deschutes River. The
canyon rim meanders through an ancient
juniper forest, and you can hear the roar of
rapids echoing down in the canyon. To the
west are the snowy and icy Cascades. The
trail is located within the Middle Deschutes
Wild and Scenic River corridor, and the
Steelhead Falls Wilderness Study Area.
Difficult trail: 3 miles total
Travel north on Highway 97 to the north
end of Terrebonne, turn left onto Lower
Bridge Road.
After 2 miles turn right on 43rd St.
After 1.7 miles turn left on Chinook Dr.,
after 2.3 miles turn left on Mustang.
Travel 1.1 miles and turn right on Shad
Rd.
Travel 1.4 miles and turn right on
Peninsula Drive.
Travel 3.2 miles and turn left on Meadow
Rd.
Travel 1/2 mile and turn right on Scout
Camp Trail. Go .2 miles to trailhead.
Deschutes County
Smith Rock, Smith Rock State Park
Less than 30 minutes from Bend, 3.5
hours from Eugene, and near the town of
Terrebonne, Ore. Smith Rock State Park
offers world-famous challenging rock
climbing, as well as miles of hiking trails
that meander through the Crooked River
with views of volcanic peaks of Oregon’s
Cascade Range. There are hosts of
opportunities for breath-taking
photography, as well. Hikers and rock-
climbers should come with plenty of water
and be aware that some parts of the Smith
Rock area pose quite a challenge, so come
prepared.
Dry Canyon Trail
-- With stairway access at
Northwest Canyon Drive and Fir Avenue, and
bicycle access at West Canyon Rim City
Park—on Rimrock between Hemlock
Avenue and Jackpine Avenue.
The Dry Canyon Trail runs through
Redmond’s Dry Canyon, which is a 250-acre
park, that combines state-of-the-art
recreational amenities for tennis, soccer,
baseball, and skateboarding. The trail
meanders 3.7 miles along the canyon floor
from the northern end at Pershall Way,
passing under Highland Avenue at the
Redmond Rotary Arts Pavillion, and ending
at Quartz. There are benches dotted along
the trail for those who are seeking a much-
needed break or just a chance to sit and
soak up the scenery.
