Forest, Lookout Mountain provides sweeping views of the Ochoco
mountains, the Cascades, meadows filled with wildflowers, an old
mine, an old lookout, and a shelter at the summit. Hikers have many
options to choose from to reach the 6,926-foot summit. The Lookout
Mountain Trail, beginning near the Ochoco Ranger Station, is about
13 or 14 miles roundtrip and rated as a more difficult hike.
An easier upward route is the Independent Mine Trail beginning
6.5 miles farther up from the ranger station on Forest Road 42. At the
trailhead, a mile up Forest Road 4205, there are three possible loop
trails to choose from to reach the summit.
Moderate to difficult trail: 6-to-7-
mile loop, or 13 to 14
miles round trip.
Round Mountain
:
7.5-mile section from
Walton Lake to the
Lookout Mountain
trailhead. Starting in a
mixed conifer forest
of fir and tamarack,
the trail skirts a rocky
ridge within a mile
with views west to
the Cascades. The
trail was designated
as a National

the trail heads back
down the south
side of Round
Mountain, there are
excellent views of
Big Summit Prairie
to the east. Take
Highway 26 15
miles east from
Prineville, then
turn right on
County Road 123
(look for signs to
Ochoco Ranger
Station and
Walton Lake). To
start the Round
Mountain hike, drive back
down FS Road 42 and take a right on FS Road 22 to Walton Lake. Just
past Walton Lake, look for a sign to the trailhead on the right (FS
Road 22-148). The trailhead is a short distance up this gravel road.

The Cove Palisades State Park-Culver Tam-a-Lau Trail
— about 7
miles
The name of this trail comes from a Native American phrase that
means "place of big rocks on the ground.” Once you scale the first
part of the trail, you will be greeted with a 3.5 mile walk around the
canyon rim. The trail gives you a close-up view of two of the three
rivers that feed into this lake. Hikers walk above the Deschutes River
arm and the Crooked River arm where they come together to help
form The Cove, which is a widely popular lake for water-skiing and
camping.
To find the trail, follow state park signs 10 miles southwest of
Madras from any of several marked turns from US 97.
Scout Camp Trailhead:
Along with four other trails in the Crooked River Canyon just to
the east, Scout Camp is the newest trail in Central Oregon. All of the
trailheads are located on Crooked River Ranch and all five trails have
just been completed this fall. From the Scout Camp Trailhead, it’s
