n July 4 runners will line up
ahead of the Giant Street Parade
for the 2nd annual Freedom 5K.
All profits from the race will go to char-
ity, 80 percent to the local Veterans of For-
eign Wars (VFW) and 20 percent to the
Molalla Chamber of Commerce.
Last year, 225 people participated and the
race raised $2,252, of which $1,802 went to
the VFW and $450 went to the Chamber of
Commerce. People of all ages showed up
(ranging from 9 to 71-years-old), and 62
percent of the participants were from out-
side of Molalla.
“This year, the Freedom 5K was awarded
a tourism grant for an ad campaign targeted
to runners in the Northwest region,” run or-
ganizer Jon Knapp said. “In addition to peo-
ple from all over Oregon, we already have
people signed up from Indiana, Ohio and
California.”
This grant isn’t the only support the run
is getting. Oregon State University’s Gener-
ating Rural Options for Weight (GROW)
program—which promotes healthy and ac-
tive lifestyles—partnered with the run this
year. “We are working together to inspire
kids and families to walk or run the race to-
gether,” Knapp said. “And to make it more
affordable we are offering family dis-
counts.” Knapp’s goal is to get 50 kids to
participate in the run.
Online registration for the race closes at
midnight on July 3 and is $26 for individu-
als or $21 per person when three or more
people from the same household register.
Day-of registration opens at 8 a.m. and is
$30. This year’s capacity is 500 partici-
pants.
All runners get a free technical T-shirt
and a free Buckeroo PRCA rodeo ticket
good for the July 4 1:30 p.m. show. Addi-
tionally, awards will be given to the top
male and female finishers.
As the race follows the parade route, and
begins just minutes beforehand, a crowd of
people will be present to cheer on the run-
ners.
“We anticipate each year being better
than the last,” Knapp said, “and the positive
impact it leaves on our community being
greater with every year.”
