Independence Day 2013
By Cory Mimms
Molalla Pioneer
O
n July 4 at 9:30 a.m. Molalla’s
streets will close for the annual
Giant Street Parade. This year’s
theme is “Riding High for 100 Years,”
as 2013 marks Molalla’s 100th birth-
day.
“We want to make sure people are
aware that the streets will be closed,”
said Terry Shankle, the parade organ-
izer. Not only will the parade flood the
streets, blocking off traffic, but just
minutes before the parade begins the
Freedom 5K runners will also takeoff.
“It will be very difficult to move
through town,” Shankle said.
Hundreds of spectators are also ex-
pected to line the parade route, which
is the same as last year (see map). For
people needing to get out of Molalla
during the festivities, Vaughan Road
will be open, Shankle said, and for
those needing to circumvent the town,
Molalla Forest Road is the best bet.
Among other bands, the Molalla
High School band will play in the pa-
rade this year. And as last year, candy
will be thrown from the floats instead
of handed out by people walking next
to them.
The Molalla Chamber of Commerce
organizes the parade every year. This
is Shankle’s second year leading the
committee and her 12th year involved
in the parade. For more information,
