Independence Day 2013
Kickoff show gets Jack Ingram
By Cory Mimms
Molalla Pioneer
C
ountry music veteran Jack Ingram
plays this year’s kickoff show, along
with MuchMore Country and Matt
Borden.
Ingram’s career began in the early ’90s,
with his debut, self-titled studio album re-
leased in 1995. But it wasn’t until a decade
later when Ingram’s career began to blow
up.
In 2005, he put out Wherever You Are.
The song zipped to the top of the U.S. Bill-
board’s Top Country Songs chart, and In-
gram’s career turned over.
“It was a jumping off point from a long
ramp,” Ingram said. “That changed my
life.”
Since then, Ingram has had nine singles
on the charts, six of which hit the top 20,
and he’s released two albums. “I’m not an
old man,” he said, “but I’m definitely a vet-
eran.”
In 2008, he won the Academy of Country
Music award for top new male vocalist, an
almost absurd award to give to someone
who had been singing and performing for,
at that point, 18 years.
Most of his early career, he played in
bars in Dallas and Houston, but he kept
plugging away on the guitar strings and
hoping for bigger gigs. It took many years
and several setbacks but in the end perse-
verance paid off.
Ingram currently isn’t signed with a
label. “The way I do my music and the way
my career is going, I need a partner not a
boss,” he said. But he is writing new music
and recording. He plans to finish a new
album (still untitled) this year.
He intends to play some of the new
music at the Molalla Buckeroo Kickoff
Show on June 29, where MuchMore Coun-
try and Matt Borden will be opening for
him.
“I’m really proud of it,” he said of his
new music. But don’t fear, he promised to
also play some of his major hits, which are
sure to get a crowd reaction. Barefoot and
Crazy, Ingram said, is always fun to play to
a crowd. “It’s bigger live. A finale kind of
song.”
Ingram has played in Oregon before
(Bend, Eugene, Portland) and after the
show in Molalla is heading to O'Fallon,
Mo., to play Heritage and Freedom Fest.
When I spoke with Ingram, he was on the
road near Austin, his home town, and look-
ing forward to spending some time with his
three kids and wife of 17 years. Though he
said he’s not officially touring this summer,
he is playing shows all over the nation,
which is pretty typical for him. He’s been
making music for more than 20 years now
and doesn’t ever see an end to his live per-
formances.
“I call it the terminal tour,” he said.
“When I die, the tour ends.”
