T
he 90th Molalla Buckeroo
has arrived, bringing with it
the riders, animals, rodeo
culture and American spirit that are
well-known parts of the local Inde-
pendence Day celebration.
But the rodeo involves so much
more than, well, the rodeo.
The announcers, the clown, the
flag team, the spectators — they’re
also integral pieces of the Fourth
of July mosaic.
It all comes together in a week’s
worth of old traditions and new
memories.
This year’s Professional Rodeo
Cowboys Association series begins
July 3 and continues through July
6 and includes two performances
on Independence Day.
Calling the action will be veteran
announcers Rob Smets and Kelly
Kenney, the same men who lent
their voices to last year’s Buckeroo
rodeo.
Smets is no stranger to the scene:
He’s a former champion bullfighter
who was inducted into the Pro-
Rodeo Hall of Fame in 2006.
“I’ve been run over by bulls 100
times,” Smets has said.
Kenney, who grew up in Mis-
souri, has been an announcer for
professional rodeos since 2001 and
usually works between 30 and 40
events each year, according to his
biography. When he’s away from
the rodeo circuit, Kenney is a cat-
tle rancher and hunting guide as
well as a college basketball and
baseball official.
For rodeo fans who want to see
additional action at no charge,
Slack will be held at the Molalla
Buckeroo grounds July 6 at 8 a.m.
