Molalla Pioneer
Independence Day 2013

W
hen you weigh less than
55 pounds and barely
stand taller than a yard-
stick, it takes courage to look a
sheep in the eye and climb aboard.
But that’s just what some young
cowboys and cowgirls will do dur-
ing this year’s Buckeroo.
Mutton Bustin’ returns as one of
the children’s favorite participatory
events—it’s also fun to watch, as
the sheep try just as hard to shake
the riders as the riders try to stay on.
Before the professional rodeo, the
kids participating in the event will
clench their teeth, grip some wool
and dig in their heels. Six seconds is
the goal, and kids who make it se-
cure their place in the championship
ride on the Fourth of July.
Every child will get a ribbon and
will have the option to ride solo or
get some balance assistance from
event helpers.
“Any kid can do it,” said Tim An-
derson, president of the Molalla
Buckeroo Association.
Parents must sign a waiver for
their children to participate, and
there is a 55 pound weight restric-
tion. Most of the participants are be-
tween 5 and 7 years old. Helmets
and vests are provided, and the
event is free.

Mutton Bustin’ is a popular event for kids at the Molalla
Buckeroo. This year, the event will take place before the
start of the PRCA Rodeo each night.
