The Spotlight
It’ll be a two-horse race for the North-
western Oregon Conference volleyball ti-
tle, and St. Helens head coach Tom Ray
figures the Lady Lions to be in that exclu-
sive mix.
Sherwood, which won the league cham-
pionship last season, will be a difficult op-
ponent once again, but Ray is confident
the Lions have the talent they need to get
the job done this fall. They graduated five
seniors from the 2012 roster, but have a
lot of players returning with extensive
varsity experience.
Throughout fall camp and tryouts, ma-
ny of the team’s alumni returned to help
out at practice.
“That’s how
I know I’m do-
ing my job,”
said Ray, who
has been
coaching at
St. Helens
since 2000.
Despite los-
ing setter Jil-
lian Ross, de-
fensive spe-
cialists Haley
Mann-Miller
and Megan
Thompson
and hitters
Ocean Jo-
banek and
Brooke Cathe-
rs, St. Helens
does return a host of talent at middle
blocker.
During tryouts, senior Gabby Susee,
who stands at nearly 6-feet, 2-inches, was
everywhere. Ray chuckled and called her
