LION FOOTBALL:
Squad enigmatic about new offense

players. Phillips said if the pair
continue to improve, they could
start this season. They’ve been
working this summer to get stron-
ger in preparation to battle some
of the older, more experienced
lines in the conference.
On the defensive side of the ball
looms blossoming star defensive
end Jacob Zartman, who stands at
6’4 and weighs in at 275 pounds, a
considerable difference from last
season. After countless hours in
the weight room this summer,
Phillips says Zartman has the re-
spect of his teammates and the
possibility of earning a college
football scholarship depending on
how the season pans out.
The Lions return several essen-
tial players from last year’s defen-
sive backfield. Taylor Long, a 6-2,
180 pound senior free safety is
gifted, according to Phillips, who
said Long’s ability to cover the
field will be a factor. Senior Chris
Grey’s hard, smart play more than
makes up for him being slightly
undersized as a defensive back,
said Phillips.
The road this season won’t be
easy for St. Helens, as they face
competition in one of the toughest
conferences in the state at their di-
vision. The Northwestern Oregon
Conference boasts two teams in
the top 10, with No. 1 Sherwood
and No. 9 Wilsonville, and four
teams in the top 20. There are still
a lot of questions to be answered
for the Lions with their new head
coach and fresh talent surround-
ing experienced players, and so
this seasons’ finish is somewhat of
a toss up.
The Lions begin their 2013 cam-
paign on the road at Cleveland
High School this Friday, Aug. 30.
The first home game is the next
week, when they will host 5A pow-
erhouse Wilsonville.
Quick Notes:
•St. Helens had one of their best
turnouts in years.
•The Lions have an experienced
quarterback returning..
•New coach Jared Phillips is install-
ing a new offense..
•St. Helens could prove more of a
challenge in the NWOC.
