Another fall sports season begins in earnest Friday
I
really can’t remember how
many of these special fall sec-
tions I’ve been involved with,
but it goes back a ways.
The first special sports section
I recall was back around 1979 at
another local paper. It wasn’t a
preview, but more a salute to St.
Helens for making the playoffs for
the first time in decades. We did
32 pages in just a couple of days. It
was a grind but well worth it.
The following year, we made
it a preview. When I came to The
Spotlight we started our own sec-
tion (around 1994) and it’s been
going strong ever since.
The first sections concentrat-
ed on football, then it expanded to
include all fall sports. Soccer came
later in the going.
There are now 10 sports teams
involved in football, volleyball, soc-
cer, and cross country.
Longtime St.
Helens High
cross country
(and track) coach
Gerry Tinkle
noted this week
that sports are
often cyclical.
Tinkle retired
from teaching this
year, but is still
coaching. He’s
right of course.
Every team we
cover is not going
to make the state playoffs every
season. Some do, some do occas-
sionally, and some struggle for a
long time.
Scappoose High had a good
fall sports year last season. The
Indians won their first football
league title in several years, the
cross country team placed at state,
the volleyball team was much
improved, and the soccer team
was one of the top four teams in
the state.
The soccer effort was exciting to
watch.
St. Helens had a surpise finish
to go to state in cross country and
the volleyball team also made it to
state.
I’m retiring from full time work
for the newspaper after this issue,
but will still help out as needed in
some sports–certainly football. I
may even write a colunn or two.
Even after 40 years it’s difficult
to predict which teams will make
the playoffs and have a shot at
state.
Scappoose was ranked first in
the power rankings last season,
having only lost a high scoring
affair against 5A Roosevelt in
their first game. Paul Revis and co.
were scoring almost at will against
some teams. Their only other loss
of the season came against a very
good Baker team, which won the
championship.
This year, the Indians look
good on paper, but they have a
lot of new personnel. Coach Sean
McNabb always is competitive
and the team could very well win
league and go deep into the play-
offs again.
St. Helens has a new coach, a
big turnout and some talent, but
they’re a bit unknown.
The Scappoose girls soccer
team has prospects again this sea-
son, but has lost a big threat with
the departure of Ariel Viera.
The Scappoose girls cross coun-
try team has a potent weapon in
Charlie Davidson, a contender for
the state title.
St. Helens girls volleyball will
again be strong and has a potent
front line. Gabby Susee makes
them “dangerous,” coach Tom Ray
says.
We hope you enjoy the insight
we have provided ont he upcoming
season with this special section.
