TRIBE VOLLEYBALL:
Coach pleased with early progress
From page B14
fense. This season, Catlow has
been named captain of the team,
which Sprenger said is a blessing
because she already knows and
understands her role.
Another big part of Sprenger’s
plan this year is sophomore Han-
nah Carey, the only freshman on
last year’s varsity team.
Sprenger had high hopes for Car-
rey at the beginning of last sea-
son, and with her work over the
summer, the good reviews have
only gotten better.
“She’s young, but I think she’s
a vocal leader,” said Sprenger.
“She spent a lot of time in the
gym, and she’s played club (vol-
leyball)... she’s really become a
solid volleyball player, and I
think she’s going to really help
us this year.”
Carrey is the only sophomore,
and will start alongside seniors
Nicole Andreotti, Abby Kessi,
and Catlow. Other seniors on
varsity include Morgan MacInn-
is, Sammi Hendrickson and Hail-
ee Holmason. Alyssa Spang is
the only freshman to make the
varsity squad.
Last year’s finish was a mas-
sive step forward for the pro-
gram, but there is still room for
improvement.
Sprenger said Banks and Asto-
ria would most likely be the big-
gest challenges for Scappoose.
Last season saw the two schools
finish in the top three in the 4A
division, meaning that the Indi-
ans definitely have their work
cut out for them going forward.
“Your whole goal every year is
to make the state playoffs,” said
Sprenger. “Then at that point
you just hope you’re peaking and
you’ve gained enough experience
that you can knock a few teams
out.”
Scappoose will host a jambo-
ree this Friday, Aug. 30, where
they will play a game with each
of their Cowapa League oppo-
nents. Their first official game is
on Sept. 3 on the road at La Salle
High School. They will return to
open their home schedule on
Thursday Sept. 5 against Molalla.

several years last year.

playoffs and would like to repeat that
feat this season.
