The face of Scappoose cross
country will look fairly different
this fall. Four seniors graduated
from the girls’ team, a squad that
won the Cowapa League title and
ended up fourth overall at state.
This group is fairly fresh, and
training has catered to that so far–
runs include things like scavenger
hunts that pair girls together in
order to help them get to know
one another.
The boys’ team, however, is al-
ready a tight-knit group, accord-
ing to head coach David Harley.
“They’re chatty,” said Harley
during practice. He laughed that
the boys tend to talk considerably
more than the girls, no matter
what they were up to.
Much of the early camaraderie
Harley contributes to the fact that
the boys, for the most part, have
been running together for several
years. Last season’s varsity team
graduated only one senior, and
most of the team joined the pro-
gram early on in high school.
The closeness of the boys’ team
may be a strong asset to their suc-
cess this season. Assistant coach
Rachael Rodrigue said running in
a pack, or at least in pairs, can
help.
“I think when you see your
teammate ahead of you, it encour-
ages you to stay with them,” said
Rodrigue. “When you have some-
one right next to you and you’re
getting tired, you can rely on their
strength to keep going. You don’t
want to let them down. They’re
right there to remind you that
you’re a team.”
Senior Hunter Hoyt, who was
second at the district meet last
fall, and Dan Carrier, the boys’ top
scorer at the state meet, both re-
turn and will likely be the leaders
this fall.
Alongside Carrier and Hoyt will
be the team’s only other senior,
James Cutrona, who returns from
varsity last year. Stephen Gift and
Jacob Harley also return from last
year’s 5th place team.
Leading the pack for the girls
once again is the tireless Charlie
Davidson, who has decided to lay
down soccer for her senior season
and focus purely on cross country
and track. Davidson finished sev-
enth at state last fall, and has a
solid chance at winning a state ti-
tle this time around according to
Harley.
The Indians also return senior
Lindsay Marquardt, who was a
part of the scoring five at the state
meet last November.
Harley is confident in his team’s
success this season, and said he
expects the boys to do well given
they lost only one scoring runner
from last year’s squad that took
fifth at state.
On the girls side, Harley said
the Cowapa League will be “wide
open” because of how the teams
have changed up in the offseason.
Tillamook will be a challenge, but
Harley said the tradition of suc-
cess at Scappoose, along with the
championship hopes of senior Da-
vidson, should spell good things
once again.
The Indians’ first action of the
season is the Wilsonville Night
Meet on Sept. 29.
Tribe cross country team will be pretty strong again

Scappoose Cross Country Coach
Scappoose senior Charlie
Davidson would like to
add a state title to her
long list of triumphs
Quick Notes:
•Scappoose lost some runners to
graduation, but still has a lot of
talent.
•The Tribe’s Charlie Davidson has
given up soccer and set her sights on
a state championship.
•The Indians will be challenged in
league this year but never count them
out.
Scappoose’s Charlie Davidson will be a contender this year for a state cross
country title. She’s given up her all-league soccer career to pursue that
dream.
