“Sometimes when you go into
a team, you’ve got a solid mid-
field and a solid offense, but
then your defense is quiet,” said
Heffernan. “All sections are
strong. That’s why I’m excited.”
The goalkeeper position is al-
so up for grabs. Senior Alix Ra-
ya and Jessica Dykes have bat-
tled for the spot throughout
training camp, and both saw
equal time during preseason
scrimmages with St. Helens
High School.
The Cowapa League isn’t his-
torically the most powerful
when it comes to girls’ soccer,
which is something that Heffer-
nan is doing his best to account
for. He plans on spending as
much time playing on the field
to push the girls, as well as hav-
ing scrimmages with the boys
team to keep his players on
their toes physically and tech-
nically.
Heffernan is also tweaking
the system to lower the divide
between varsity and JV, chang-
ing the two teams to have more
of a club feel with a first and
second team, giving the oppor-
tunity for players to move up if
they improve as the season
goes on.
At the onset, much of the ros-
ter is fairly fresh. Varsity has
just three seniors, including Ra-
ya, Jenny Vardanega and Alex-
andria Courtney. There are also
just three juniors; Kimberly
Carpenter, Haley Heuer and
Emily Muth.
The majority of the roster is
made up of sophomores. Jones
up front, Davidson, Natalie
Muth and Frank in the midfield
and Dykes, who is battling for
the start in goal, are all sopho-
mores. The sophomore talent
on the team also includes Sa-
mantha Darr and Madison Ver-
zino.
The Lady Indians will open
their schedule at La Salle High
School on Sept. 10, and make
their first home appearance on
Sept. 17 when they welcome
Molalla High School to Chinook
Field.
