The Central Oregon District of the Oregon
Department of Forestry is one of 14 districts
across the state of Oregon. The district cov-
ers all or part of 11 counties, employs per-
manent and seasonal personnel, and offers
many services to the public including wildfire
protection on 2.2 million acres of state and
private forestland.
The local district headquarters are located
in Prineville. Due to the size of the district, it
has been split into three units; headquar-
tered in Prineville, John Day, and The Dalles.
The department’s motto, “Stewardship in
Forestry,” is backed by its mission statement
“To serve the people of Oregon through pro-
tection, management, and promotion of a
healthy forest environment, which will
enhance Oregon’s livability and economy for
today and tomorrow.” The Oregon
Department of Forestry is dedicated to serv-
ing the private landowner offering programs
such as:
Protection from Fire:
The department pro-
vides wildland fire prevention and suppres-
sion services for private and state forestland.
Private Forests:
The department is respon-
sible for environmental protection through
the Forest Practices Act.
Forestry assistance and forest health:
The
department assists private non-industrial
woodland owners by providing timber man-
agement and pest control information. Grant
fund-
ing is available periodically to
assist landowners with fuel treatment to
reduce materials that contribute to large
wildfires.
Urban and community forestry:
The pro-
gram provides financial and educational
resources for community forestry issues.
Protection from fire is the department’s
number one priority for these private forest-
lands. Fire management in the Prineville
Unit is a cooperative effort with the Ochoco
National Forest, the Bureau of Land
Management, the Bureau of Indian Affairs,
and Crook County Fire and Rescue District.
Fire management is coordinated through the
Central Oregon Interagency Dispatch Center
located at the Prineville-Crook County
Airport. These coordinated efforts also take
place in Jefferson and Deschutes counties.
