COIC’s Work-Education program is an alterna-
tive education option for students in Central
Oregon, ages 14-21. The program offers both
classroom and outdoor work experience, and
can help students reach their own goals. In
Prineville, the program has been carefully devel-
oped to help students obtain a high school
diploma or a GED; help develop the work ethic
and attitude necessary to succeed; help stu-
dents enter the job market by teaching skills
that are transferable to a paying job and pro-
vide the opportunity to work outdoors and earn
incentives.
The Work-Education Program would not be
possible if not for the strong support and
unique partnership with the school district.
Academically, all students in the Work-
Education Program have the opportunity to
earn credits that can be applied to their high
school diploma. Students can make up missing
credits and return to school or prepare for GED
testing.
The work part of the program is optional - about one-third of the
students choose to participate. Each student becomes part of a
work crew with five to eight of their classmates. Students earn
high school credits, learn more about the natural environment, and
earn a small stipend while working on natural resource and com-
munity service projects.

Thanks to technology, classes are online
though COCC. The college uses satellite and
computer technology to deliver classes to stu-
dents. Distance learning makes programs
available to communities throughout the col-
lege district, including courses required to com-
plete an Associate of Arts Degree. Classes are
offered online and students can access them
anywhere in the COCC district. The college’s
main campus is in Bend, with a satellite cam-
pus in Redmond and Madras that offers most
of the college’s classes. Students are required to take free intro-
ductory training sessions before signing up for online courses. For

Crook County Open Campus is a new pro-
gram through Oregon State University Outreach
and Engagement to bring educational opportu-
nities to rural communities -- especially place-
bound learners. In fall 2011, Crook County saw
an education dream realized when the COCC
Crook County Open Campus facility was official-
ly opened to classes. It is one of three pilot
sites in Oregon for Open Campus, providing a
convenient location for students — regardless of
their education goals. COCC and OSU are now
offering a variety of credit and non-credit classes in Prineville. In
addition to bringing back college-credit classes to Prineville
through COCC and OSU, the campus is working with the local
school district to expand class options for high school students.
Through community and partner support, it is a one-of-a kind edu-
