The Crook County School District is
located in the heart of Central Oregon in
Prineville, which has a population of
approximately 10,000 residents. In spite
of being rural, Prineville is also joined by
business giants like Facebook and Apple
Inc., and education partners like Google.
Crook County
School District
serves five ele-
mentary schools,
including
Paulina
Elementary School
— the most rural
school in the dis-
trict. The other three ele-
mentary schools include
Ochoco Elementary, Cecil
Sly Elementary, Crooked
River Elementary,
and
Powell Butte Community
Charter School.
Ochoco Elementary
gained a new principal in
2012, as Dave Robinson
took the reins in
September. His student
body has an innovative
student group called “Kid
Power,” and Robinson has
also worked hard to gain
new technology, providing
Google Chrome Notebooks for his teach-
ers’ curriculum.
Cecil Sly Elementary
is Crook County’s
newest grade school and is headed up by
Principal Jim Bates. In 2011, the school
was selected to be a study site by Oregon
Response to Intervention (OrRTI) represen-
tatives. The school has hosted several vis-
its by other school districts. Bates has also
adopted a new model called “Storyline,”
which has enhanced the arts in his school,
and is popular among students and teach-
ers.
Teachers in all schools throughout the
district have implemented the Response to
Intervention (RTI)
model, and the
result has been a
cohesive system
between the
schools to effec-
tively serve all
students in core
areas of reading, writing,
and math.
Crooked River
Elementary
is Crook
County’s oldest school,
and Cheri Rasmussen is
the principal. Crooked
River is the only school in
the district that has sepa-
rate buildings for grades
1-3 and grades 4-5.
Rasmussen is an innova-
tive driving force for her
students and teachers,
and implements artist-in-
residence programs
throughout the school
year. Crooked River has one of the
strongest SMART reading programs in the
district as well.
In May, 2010,
Powell Butte Elementary
saw its last days as a regular school of
CCSD. The 2011-2012 school year was
the school’s second year as a charter
school--Powell Butte Community Charter
