of that lofty standing, grinding out a
pair ofhard-foughtwins overClacka-
masandRoseburg to reach thecham-
pionshipmatch for the first time in
schoolhistory.
Had the season endedwith a thor-
oughdrubbingat thehandsof theNo.
1CentralCatholicRams, it stillwould
havebeenviewedasnothing less than
a resounding success.
Lakeridgeaccomplishedeverything
that it could have reasonably expect-
ed.Butreason tookabackseatatLib-
ertyHighSchoolonSaturday.
Thematch featured the longest-ev-
er set in anOregon state title bout. It
featured Lakeridge outscoring Cen-
tralCatholicbyanastoundingmargin
of 29-9 during a stretch that lasted
frommidway through the thirdsetun-
tilmidway through the fourthset,one
that effectively locked up thePacers’
victory. And it featured Lakeridge
knockingoff theRams forashocking,
emotional 31-29, 23-25, 25-12, 25-22vic-
tory, locking down the school’s first
volleyball state title.
“Itmeans somuch to all of us. I
neverwouldhaveexpected thisat the
beginning of the year and I couldn’t
have asked for a better team,” libero
EmilyScott said.
CentralCatholic started thematch
with theconfidenceofa team thathad
easily dispatched the Pacers three
shortweeksagoat theWestLinn Invi-
tational.
“Honestly, thatwas the best thing
that could have happened to us.We
were kind of like a deer in the head-
lights andwe got that out of our sys-
tem,” coachWendy Stammer said of
the team’searlier loss to theRams.
After Lakeridgewon the first two
pointsof thematch, theRams started
toexert themselves,winning15of the
next 20 points to build a 15-7 advan-
tage.
ThePacers lookedabitoutofsorts,
committingfiveerrorsas they fellbe-
hind. Lakeridge trailed 17-10 before
starting its rally in force. Lakeridge
wonnineof thenext11points,getting
a pair of kills from SaskiaMcNairy
andone fromMcKennaMoore toknot
the scoreat 19-19.
The teams then traded pointswith
the Pacers taking a 22-21 advantage
ona servicewinnerbyMoore.
CentralCatholicwouldwin thenext
three points to go up 24-22 before a
serviceerrorgave thePacers life.
Anetviolationby theRamsknotted
the score at 24-24. The teams then
went back and forthwith Lakeridge
fendingoff threesetpoints.TheRams
appeared tohavewon the setwhen a
MaddieMarshall spike sailed long,
but the referees determined that the
ballhadbeen tippedandawarded the
point to thePacers.
AfterCentralCatholicwent up 29-
28, Lakeridge ran off three straight
points,gettingawell-placedpass from
MaliaScott,akill fromMcNairyanda
service winner from Kacie Van Sti-
phout togive themarathonfirstset to
thePacers.
Lakeridgewouldbuildan8-5 lead in
thesecondsetaswellbefore theRams
stormed back. The second set fea-
turedmultiplerunswith theRamsgo-
ingup 19-16 before a pair ofMcNairy
kills tied thingsupagain.
“I think by aboutmidway through
the second setwe had a lot of confi-
dence andwe knewwehad a chance
tobeat them,”EmilyScott said.
TheRamswould go up 24-21 but a
pair of errors nearly let the Pacers
back into the contest.A service error
fromLakeridgewouldultimatelygive
the close set toCentralCatholic and
theRams had seemingly righted the
ship.
But the Pacers refused to give an
inch.The third setwas nip and tuck
early onwithMcNairy tallying three
