LAKE OSWEGO REVIEW
DECEMBER 2013

Vega served two terms as president on
the Lakewood Center’s board before tak-
ing a job at the center. She also has spent
time on stage singing and acting and is a
piano and organ teacher.
“She is just a true artistic talent,” Ir-
ving said.
Her hard work and talent has earned
her attention before. Portland Drammy
Committee bestowed upon her the 2010
Lifetime Achievement Award, and, last
spring, she received the 2013 Lake Os-
wego Chamber of Commerce – Kay Vega
Arts Champion Award.
“It’s fabulous to have Kay,” said An-
drew Edwards, who has been the Lake-
wood Center for the Arts ex-
ecutive director since 1977.
“She’s been here a long time.
She’s positive about what
Lakewood can accomplish in the com-
munity, and part of our mission is to in-
spire and nurture a love of theater and
the arts, and Kay embraces that fully.”
She’s garnered other theater honors as
well as — little known fact — winning a
waltz competition in her late teens.
The mother of three children and
grandmother of four said she remembers
when the Lakewood Theatre Co. was a
small group that met in a little church off
of Greenwood Road, performing at local
schools. When the Lakewood School on
State Street went on the market in 1979,
the theater company decided it was time
to expand. A new $3 million project to
finish a stage house at the Lakewood
Center finished up in 2003.
And expansion at Lakewood contin-
ues.
The Lakewood team is amid a $1
million campaign renovation, which in-
cludes the Artist Training Facility, full of
rehearsal space and other features — con-
struction is planned for 2014.
“We would love to be able to start con-
struction as soon as we are able to receive
funds to complete it,” Edwards said.
