KayVega: LO’s theater star
Woman About Town
Kay Vega, executive producer for Lakewood Center for the Arts and Lakewood Theatre Company, enjoys a front row seat this holiday season.
V
ega is among the top five
brightest stars in the night
sky.
There’s also a Vega shin-
ing in Lake Oswego — first
name, Kay. For 43 years,
she’s served as the Lakewood Center for
the Arts & Lakewood Theatre Co.’s execu-
tive producer, charged with determining
which theatrical works to spotlight. Vega
launched her career as a volunteer, transi-
tioning to a full-time employee after about
a decade on the job. Up until a couple of
years ago, she also acted as director of edu-
cation, and now she supervises that posi-
tion. In her free time, she attends concerts
and plays at the Lakewood Center.
“I just love the arts,” she said.
Shying away from speaking about her-
self, she preferred to discuss happenings at
the Lakewood Center, and there’s plenty to
talk about this holiday season with a cou-
ple of big productions: “Inspecting Carol,” a
comedy about an ill-fated play; and “Irving
Berlin’s White Christmas,” a new musical
based on the 1954 classic, “White Christ-
mas.” There’s also a music and dance show
for children this month, “The Peppermint
Bear Show: Seasoned Greeting.”
“There’s just a lot going on,” Vega said.
Vega said the Lakewood Center “has
grown and grown” since she came to Lake
Oswego in 1969.
“She’s been instrumental in building
up the Lakewood Center and selecting the
plays to make it the really top quality the-
ater that it is today,” said Don Irving, trea-
surer on the Lakewood Center board.
Irving said she selects unusual gems
such as “Spamalot,” based on the comedy
“Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” and
Vega spearheaded The Lost Treasures Col-
lection, a series of obscure and rarely per-
formed musicals done in a concert/cabaret
version at the Lakewood Center. She also
coordinates annual trips for locals to sam-
ple the array of fine arts offerings at met-
ropolitan locales such as New York and
London.
