Luminaries
by Eleanor Catton
The winner of this year’s Man Booker Prize, a layered ghost story and page turner set dur-
ing the New Zealand gold rush.
The Pure Gold Baby
by Margaret Drabble
Jessica Speight, a young anthropology student in 1960s London, is taxed by the rigors of
single motherhood when she gives birth to a little girl with special needs and an atypical
mind.
The Cartographer of No Man’s Land
by P. S. Duffy
When his beloved brother-in-law goes missing at the front in 1916, Angus defies his pacifist
upbringing to join the war and find him. This is a strong debut with terrifyingly real and
detailed battle scenes and unexpected plot twists.
Thank You for Your Service
by David Finkel
Iraq war veterans, after returning from their service, struggle with readjusting to civilian
and family life, some while suffering from crippling PTSD or traumatic brain injury.
The Inheritor’s Powder: A tale of arsenic, murder, and the new
forensic science
by Sandra Hempel
Medical journalist Hempel examines the intertwined stories of a celebrated 1833 murder
case and an unknown chemist who devises a test to determine the presence of arsenic in
the body. This is fascinating forensic history for fans of CSI and similar television shows.
In These Days, the Home is a Tired Place
by Jessica Hollander
Winner of the 2013 Katherine Anne Porter Prize in Short Fiction, Hollander’s debut collec-
tion of stories is an intriguing blend of the odd and the commonplace.
Book of Ages: The Life and Opinions of Jane Franklin
by Jill Lepore
Lepore reveals Benjamin Franklin’s youngest sister, Jane, as a passionate reader, gifted
writer, and shrewd political commentator. Maureen Corrigan of NPR calls the book thrill-
ing, and adds that it enriches our sense of everyday life in Colonial America.
Crooked Numbers
by Tim O’Mara
Raymond Donne, a cop-turned educator, investigates the reportedly gang-related death of a
former student. Suspenseful and well-plotted, this novel has a likeable lead character and
a realistic and heart-tugging look at inner-city life.
The Night Guest
by Fiona McFarlane
In this unsettling psychological thriller, widowed Ruth lives a quiet life in an Australian
seaside home until Frida, who claims to be a government caseworker and “carer,” enters
her life. This is a novel of isolation and vulnerability, with a hint of magical realism.
A Final Reckoning
by Susan Moody
The lodge where her sister was murdered twenty-three years earlier is now a luxury hotel,
and Chantal Frazer books a weekend there, searching for answers about the crime. She
meets people who knew her sister and the family for whom she worked as an au pair. As
she probes the past, she begins to realize things are not as they seem and she is putting her
own life at risk. Gruesome and suspenseful, this is a page-turner with a surprising ending.

Recently read:
This is Life by Dan Rhodes
It takes a very rich story to keep me turning
the pages. Never having read any books by
Dan Rhodes, I wasn’t sure what to expect.
I was hooked on ‘This is Life’ after page one!
It’s a story where random acts and circumstances
come together in a beautiful and entertaining tapestry. Follow
Aurelie Renard, a Parisian art student, through a hysterical and crazy
adventure as she attempts to complete her art project and finds love
in the most unexpected places. A colorful cast of characters surround this lovable story.
Honestly, I haven’t laughed this much in years!
