he holiday season is upon us, and it’s going to be a short one.
There are only three full weeks between Thanksgiving and
Christmas this year. The busiest shipping days will be from the
16th to the 19th, and the deadline for Ground shipping to the East
Coast will be Tuesday, the 17th, assuming no weather issues.
Of course if you miss the deadline for Ground, UPS offers 3-Day
Select, 2nd Day Air and Next Day Air, too. You can ship as late as the 23rd if
you need to!
There are a few things you should know before you ship. First, there are
some things that you cannot ship due to various regulations. No alcohol
(including beer and wine), no tobacco, and no hazardous materials. You also
cannot use a box that has markings for any of these items on it.
A sturdy corrugated cardboard shipping box is a must. Moving and stor-
age boxes are made for stacking atop like-sized boxes, so they have their
strength in the edges. They can be identified by the “ECT” (edge crush test)
designation on their bottoms. Shipping boxes
have a wider fluting, and resist pressure against
their faces. They will have a burst test or “mullen”
test designation on them. Smaller boxes should
have a 200lb burst test designation. Larger boxes
should have 275lb or more, depending on the
weight of the contents.
Don’t wrap the shipping box with paper. It can
be torn-off on the conveyer belts. Use shipping
tape, not duct tape. Duct tape does not stick well
to cardboard when the humidity goes up.
There should also be some cushioning material
between the sides of the box, and the contents.
Two inches on each side is recommended for
most items.
