ake one step outside and it is clear that fall is here and
winter is on the way. That means spending more time
indoors with family and friends. How is that sofa treat-
ing you? Does the armchair quarterback need a new
recliner? Are you getting quality sleep on your mat-
tress set? Need a new dining set for holiday entertain-
ing?
For over fifty years and three generations Martin’s Town & Country
Furniture has been offering top quality furniture and service and the
best prices. You are familiar with some of the lines that we carry, such as
La-Z-Boy, Tempur-pedic, Sealy and Howard Miller.
This year we added several new lines that we are very excited to
offer. Fireside Lodge (rustic wood furniture), Borkholder (Amish hand-
crafted furniture), Mac Motion (Scandinavian style leather chairs and
ottomans) and Mako (alder and pine furniture from British Columbia).
Walter Martin founded Martin’s in Molalla in 1947 and moved to the
rural Canby location in 1963. Two of Walt’s sons, Robert and Neil, were
the second generation at the store. Now, two of Walt’s grandsons, Neil
and Joel, continue in the family business. We are blessed to be part of
such a friendly and supportive community and thank our patrons from
the bottom of our hearts for helping us to continue doing what we
love.
We wish for a happy holiday season for all and hope you will come
see us so at Martin’s so we can help make your house a “Home For the
Holidays.”

he winter season is here and along with the cool temperatures
comes the holiday shuffle of shopping for Christmas, attending par-
ties, family visits and a host of other things that can take a person
out of their normal daily activity. The holidays can be a catch-22 as
we enjoy great food and family, however, the ramifications of over-
doing our food plates usually puts on an average of 8-10 pounds
per person during this time frame along with a loss of energy from
stress and consuming calories without proper nutritional value. So how can we
avoid the holiday over indulgence and keep our energy levels at a productive
level? Here are some tips that will help and not break your bank!
TIME TO THINK ENERGYWHENWE EAT
Plan your events with your food intake for the day. If you know you are attend-
ing a party or social event adjust your food
intake for the day. Choose low calorie whole
foods that have little or no sugar and are
high in fiber. Forget about breakfast cereals
and that loaded latte that have hidden calo-
ries and more sugar than you need for the
entire day. Focus on lean protein with your
breakfast and whole grain carbohydrates.
Sugary breakfast cereals and breakfast sand-
wiches need to be avoided. Look to add great
antioxidant foods to breakfast such as
adding blueberries and or cranberries to oat-
meal , these fruits provides a naturally sweet
taste while avoiding refined sugar.
Look for small energy packed snacks
before lunch that will keep you alert and sti-
fle your hunger. Great choices would be:
hardboiled egg, spinach, almonds, low fat yogurt, organic peanut butter (if no
allergies) and foods high in fiber.
Keep lunch simple and avoid processed foods and high glycolic carbohydrates
that will trick your body into a craving for more sugary food. Again, think about
consuming a lean protein, whole food carbohydrate, and fiber rich foods. Stay
out of the fast food lines!! Lunch is a great time to add more antioxidants into
your meal. Look for fruit and vegetables that have purple, red, blue, orange or
yellow colors.
Choose the after lunch snack wisely as your body hits the mid day let down.
Keep fresh fruit, vegetables, and raw nuts and seeds on hand to stave off hunger
& reduce sugar and salt cravings.
Keeping dinner simple is another great idea during the holidays with lean
meat, whole food carbohydrates, vegetables, and fiber rich food such as: kidney,
pinto and black beans.
Finally, if you are confused about what to eat and when to eat, follow this sim-
ple rule: Eat lean meats and vegetables, nuts and seeds, some fruit , little starch,
no sugar and choose fruits high in antioxidants. Stay clear of processed carbohy-
drates that clutter the grocery shelves. Check the back of every food label for
simple sugars under the carbohydrate list and avoid fast food. These choice and
changes may sounds hard, however the rewards will pay benefits increasing ener-
gy and avoiding the holiday weight gain. Bottom line…EAT REAL FOOD, not pack-
aged food and COOK for YOURSELF. Happy Holidays!
