D
urham is a forested
town nestled between
Interstate 5 and the
cities of Tigard and
Tualatin in a 265-acre area.
The population is about 1,400.
The city is named for Albert
Alonzo Durham, a successful
businessman who came to Ore-
gon in 1847 from New York. Up-
on arrival, Durham built his
first sawmill below Oregon City
follwed by another in Oswego.
In 1869, he sold both sawmills
and moved to Washington
County, where he built a saw-
mill and a flour mill near Fanno
Creek.
Locals referred to the area
near the creek as DurhamMills.
After construction of the Ore-
gon Electric Railway nearby,
they called the region Durham.
The city of Durham officially
incorporated in 1966, after fears
of increased expansion by Ti-
gard and Tualatin led the com-
munity to protect the quality of
life residents had come to enjoy.
Many of the
people who
live in Dur-
ham have cho-
sen to live
there because
of the pres-
ence of the
many tall
trees that have been preserved,
explains the city’s website.
Slightly over 50 acres of the city
is designated as parks or
greenspaces.
The city has a strong tree or-
dinance, which requires per-
mits for removal of all trees
greater than 5 inches in diame-
ter (measured 2 feet above
ground).
