Connecting Our Communities

H
igher education in-
stitutions serve as
not only places to
learn but also cultur-
al keystones of a community.
The area features many
schools with Portland Com-
munity College alone offering
three campuses residents can
tap for activities and academ-
ics.
The PCC-Sylvania Campus
is known for its annual pow-
wow, and that location also
houses a popular performing
arts center.
Lewis & Clark College is
highly regarded for its aca-
demics as well as its connec-
tion to the arts.
It was there renowned poet
William Stafford taught for 30
years, and the college is hold-
ing a host of events in his hon-
or this school year.
Stafford was named the
consultant in poetry to the Li-
brary of Congress in 1970, a
position now known as poet
laureate. Stafford would have
turned 100 on Jan. 17.
Marylhurst University can
boast several historic build-
ings, including the BP
John Administration Building,
which was finished in 1930.
Clackamas Community Col-
lege features an arts gallery
and a thriving theater.
Pacific Northwest College of
Art and the Oregon College of
Art and Crafts serve as a cul-
tural hubs.
