W
hether you’re a totally
wired, web-packing, up-to-
the-minute kind of person
or, like some of us, utterly
old school — your local library has much
more to offer if the door you use to access
it is a little more high-tech than the glass
one out front.
The books, movies, music CDs and
books on CD you’ll find there are far more
accessible and manageable if you don’t
simply go to the library and hope you’ll
find something good.
The library networks in Clackamas,
Multnomah and Washington counties all
feature deep, deep pools of borrowable
items when you search for them online
and reserve them with your own account.
Those items can then be held for you at
your local branch or, in some cases, even
sent to your home. Portland-area library
networks are also getting into download-
ing in a big way.
Take movies and TV shows, for exam-
ple. The variety you’ll find at any single
branch of your county network pales by
comparison with what’s at your fingertips
when they’re pok-
ing a keyboard or handheld device.
Multnomah County allows you to re-
serve 15 items — and that includes books,
music, movies and (counting as one item)
an entire season of a television series.
This is by far the best way to watch a
year’s worth of “Breaking Bad” — and
don’t be surprised if you gobble up a
whole season in a weekend. The big ad-
vantage over Netflix and Redbox, of
course, is the fact it is FREE. Another nice
bonus is the fact you have the items for
three weeks, and many can be renewed
for another three weeks.

brary system, visit one of these websites:
