What is Naturopathic Medicine? Many people have a limited understanding
of what a Naturopathic Doctor is, or how they can benefit from seeing one. Our
doctors, Dr. Erin Walker and Dr. Jennifer Tuttle are primary care physicians. They
treat all kinds of conditions from joint pain and digestive disorders to hyper-
tension and diabetes.
They can prescribe medication and perform annual
physical exams just like other primary care physicians,
though they try to use pharmaceutical drugs sparingly. In
most cases, Dr.Walker and Dr. Tuttle use a combination of
herbal therapies, nutrients (vitamins, minerals and amino
acids) and lifestyle changes to support the healing
processes of the body.
These methods have fewer side effects and support
your body’s own healing power so you don’t have to
remain on supplements or prescription drugs long term.
During your first office visit your Naturopathic Doctor
will spend an hour with you taking a thorough history,
performing a physical exam and ordering the appropriate
lab work to help identify the cause of your symptoms.
Dr.Walker and Dr. Tuttle can evaluate hormones, look
for food sensitivities, and assess other lab results.
Once the laboratory information has been evaluated
they will spend time explaining to you the cause of
your symptoms and what treatments are available to
help your body heal. Sometimes the treatment
requires changes in your lifestyle or diet.
Understanding the power of daily habits on your
health can help lower cholesterol and decrease risks of
diabetes and heart disease and help you lose weight.
Using treatments that stimulate your body to heal will
make your tissues stronger and prevent the symptoms
from returning.
Dr. Erin Walker and Dr. Jennifer Tuttle are currently seeing patients at Canby
Clinic. The clinic is located at 452 NW 1st Avenue in Canby. You are welcome to
schedule a free 15-minute consultation to meet with the doctors and learn
more about natural medicine. If you don’t have insurance we offer a 30% dis-
count to patients that pay at time of service.
There is also a $25 coupon in this month’s Connection, good towards your
first office visit. This coupon can be used towards your co-pay if your insurance
has naturopathic benefits. Many insurances accepted, including Motor Vehicle
Accidents andWorker’s Compensation.

There is HOPE for those living with
memory loss. There are researchers all
over the world looking to find a cure for
memory loss and others who are devel-
oping drugs that improve the quality of
life for those who
already are diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s dis-
ease.
Their ultimate hope
is to find a way to pre-
vent the disease from
ever taking hold in
the body.
According to the
Alzheimer’s
Association an esti-
mated 5.2 million
people in the United
States are living with
Alzheimer’s disease
and 80,000 of them
are right here in
Oregon.
By 2050 the total number of people
whose lives will be changed forever with
a diagnosis of Alzheimer’s is expected to
triple unless there is a medical break-
through to prevent, slow or stop the dis-
ease.
At Country Side Living and Thelma’s
Place our goal is to take care of the per-
son who is already living with memory
loss as well as their family. We will let the
researchers take care of finding a cure
and the right medications to ease the
symptoms of Alzheimer’s.
Specifically here’s what Thelma’s Place
(
) can do to make
the journey easier:
• Provide caregiver support groups to
give hope, encouragement and informa-
tion about the disease.
• Provide caregivers with a few hours of
respite each week from their responsibili-
ties so they can rest and recharge their
own batteries in order to give care as
long as it is needed.
• Have those diag-
nosed with memory loss
come to our day respite
center, an Adult Day
Center. This is a fun, safe
place where those with
memory loss can come
each week to learn new
things through programs
designed specifically for
them and what they
enjoy doing. Each
month there are field
trips to exciting places
like Multnomah Falls and
the Clackamas County
Fair.
While our efforts at
Thelma’s Place are
designed to help the person diagnosed
with Alzheimer’s or other dementia to
remain successfully in their home as long
as possible, we know in many cases the
disease progresses to the point where
the care needs become too much for the
caregiver to do alone in their home. This
is a time when Country Side Living can
help.
Caring for a loved one who has memo-
ry loss is a journey no family should have
to take alone. Thankfully, that isn’t neces-
sary with help from Thelma’s Place and
Country Side Living.
