Brain Teasers
MOLALLA: Volleyball
Continued from page 6
They played their second
game on the road, at
Scappoose, and lost 0-3.
Tuesday’s match was
tough, and by Thursday the
girls were sore, Coach
Carol Grauer said. “As a
team we played very poor-
ly.”
They lost the first set 9-
25, the second 15-25 and
the third 12-25. “It seemed
the whole night we were
one step behind and never
caught up,” Grauer said.
The girls proved in their
first game that they can
play extremely well though,
despite having graduated
six seniors, two of which
were starters.
Grauer said the girls
showed “tremendous
improvement” the last two
years, and this year she
expects to go to playoffs.
Watch for spikes from
Daniels, Johnson and
Thrower. All three are very
accurate on the attack.
Ferlan also showed a lot
of precision early in the
season. With any combina-
tion of Ferlan, Daniels,
Johnson and Thrower in the
attack zone, Molalla will be
tough to beat.

Halverson is better in the
attack zone. She can get
above the net and hit pow-
erful spikes.
Courtney McGrath and
Audrey Barden are also
good close to the net.
The team as a whole is
coordinated, setting up for
good strikes and reposition-
ing quickly for defense.
They proved it in their
first league game of the sea-
son, on Thursday, Sept. 5.
They swept Falls City 3-0.
They were third in the
Casco League last year.
With the skill they showed
early in the season, they
have the potential to be at
the top of the league this
year.

Freshman Matthew
Borowczak showed some
speed in Wilsonville
though, finishing the 3,000
meter in just more than 11
minutes and coming in 31st
among the freshmen. Ahead
of him was junior Cameron
Fischer. He crossed the line
at the 10:36 mark, but he
only took 56th among the
juniors.
In Tillamook, running
5,000 meters, Fischer took
42nd, finishing with a time
of 21:10. Borowczak came
in 68th with a time of
22:34.
At the JV level,
Freshman Damon Seward
impressed. He finished fifth
with a time of 21:53, only
43 seconds more than
Fischer.

Girls
Country Christian got to
test themselves in Oregon
City at the Pioneer Stampede,
a 3,000 meter race. The girls
had three top-20 finishers:
freshman Gabriel Fincher
(18th), junior Anna
Cunningham (14th) and sen-
ior Carolyn Botsford (10th).
They ran again in the
Tillamook Invitational on
Sept. 7, where they met hard
competition and bumped the
length up to 5,000 meters.
They didn’t do as well with
the added distance.
The top finisher on the
girls team was Botsford,
placing 120th. Cunningham
crossed the line less than a
second later, landing the
121st spot. Fincher took
126th.
Boys
The boys team had four
top-20 finishes in their first
meet: sophomores Alex
Satrum (18th) and Parker
McClaugherty (20th); juniors
Levi Losli (13th) and Ben
Grandle (19th).
In Tillamook, the boys fin-
ished similar to the girls.
Losli did best at 100th. Next
up for the Cougars was soph-
omore John Kendal (128th)
and Satrum (138th).
