ast year, Molalla’s
boys soccer team
went unbeaten in
league play and 13-3 overall,
finishing first in the Tri-
Valley Conference. However,
eight of their players graduat-
ed, leaving a large hole of
uncertainty in this season.
They also changed head
coaches this summer, replac-
ing Jory Shene with Ryan
Gates. Gates’ biggest concern
at the start of the season was
building his offense. As he
was uncertain who his scor-
ers would be, he opted to
change the formation up.
“I’m hoping it becomes more
fluid,” he said preseason.
It appears to be working.
Molalla’s second game
was canceled due to light-
ning, but they won their first
game 5-0, against the
Junction City Tigers.
Darian Baughman took the
first goal of the season in the
fourth minute of play. Less
than three minutes later, Luis
Rojas lobbed one in from the
corner. Erik Dickson and
Kyle Carpenter also scored in
the first half, and Fortino
Medina got one in the net
late in the second half.
Their goalkeepers are
Emmanuel Aquino and A.J.
Escalante. Both showed good
speed and leadership.
Based on how they played
their first game, there’s a
major chance they’ll again be
at the top of the Tri-Valley
Conference.

he girls team ended
last season second
in the Tri-Valley
Conference. This year, even
with a few major player loss-
es, they could challenge for
that spot again or possibly go
for the top.
Their first game, on the
road against the Junction City
Tigers, ended with a 4-0 win.
Their second game was can-
celed due to lightning.
Sophomore Audrey Bever
scored the first goal of the
season, followed by seniors
Isabella Petitta, Josie Child
and Emily Bever.
The girls have a new head
coach this year. Jim Seward
replaced Lisa Jensen. Seward
previously coached the JV2
team, so he knows most of
the girls, their strengths and
fears on the field.

C
olton was a late
addition to cross
country last year.
They didn’t start running
until after the season had
already started. This year,
Coach Mark Shelton got
them running earlier. His
expectations for this season
are higher than for last. His
aim is to get everyone top-
20 finishes. Their first meet
was canceled due to light-
ning. Their next opportunity
to test themselves is at the
Molalla Invitational on
Saturday, Sept. 14.
Girls
The girls team had two
runners last year, Mikaela
Shelton and Brylee Moyle.
Both return this year. Moyle
took 15th in district as a
freshman. She has been
training a lot, Shelton said.
“Hopefully she’ll finish in
the top ten.”
Mikaela is a strong runner
as well. She took 11th in
district last year as a junior.
Boys
On the boys side, Shelton
expects Louis Norton to do
well. Norton was a freshman
last year and placed 39th at
districts.
Tony Hayes is the key
returner though. He is a sen-
ior this year and placed 17th
in district last year.
T
he Cougars cross
country team is
back for the second
year in a row. Lewandowski
said he suspects their two
newest runners may be the
fastest on the team. Junior
Levi Losli and senior Carolyn
Botsford, who is a transfer
from Molalla.
There are a couple key
returners, who may contend
with Losli and Botsford
though. On the boys side,
Ben Grandle and Alex
Satrum, and on the girls side,
Anna Cunningham.
W
ith some new
talent and a few
solid returners,
the girls team is fast this
year.
“On paper, we’re the team
to beat,” Coach Gary Fischer
said preseason. Fischer
recently retired, and the dis-
trict currently has not offi-
cially hired a new coach.
The team opened their sea-
son in Wilsonville on Aug.
29. They had four top-20 fin-
ishers: senior Emily Bever
(sixth); sophomores Amanda
Clarizio (11th) and Audrey
Bever (16th); and freshman
Emilee Carr (11th).
It was a strong start, one
that was topped in Tillamook
on Sept. 7. Molalla took first,
ahead of Estacada and
Tillamook.
Emily Bever lead the pack,
taking first with a time of
20:52. Close behind was
Clarizio (4th) and Audrey
Bever (6th).
Brianna and Heather
Loughridge ran a good pace
as well, finishing only five
spots apart at 18th and 23rd.
Though Carr didn’t snug-
gle with the top ten, as she
did in Wilsonville, she did
take 26th.
Boys
The boys team has less
runners and are younger than
the girls team. They lost their
major speed, Pake Benthin,
who graduated, and Gabe
Collins, who is attending
Franklin High School this
year.
“He was a huge loss,”
Fischer said of Collins. He
added that there’s a lot of
raw talent on the team, it’s
just a matter of shaping it
into competitive runners.
