Women have long been a vital part of western
Washington County’s business scene.
If you think about killer cinnamon buns, the name Maggie probably comes to
mind. And if you want some locally roasted coffee, the initials BJ (for Becky
Jo) may pop up. But it’s not just the food industry where our local women
shine. They can be found from construction sites to board rooms.
In fact, nearly a third of American businesses are now run by women – and that figure is
rising quickly.
The most recent census data show there are nearly 8 million women-owned enterprises
in this country and that they are growing at twice the rate of male-owned businesses.
In western Washington County women hold prominent posts not only in business, but
also education and government. Leslie Hallick is president of Pacific University, Jolynn
Becker is the city manager in Banks, Yvonne Curtis heads the Forest Grove School District
and Janie Schutz just marked her one-year anniversary as Forest Grove’s first female
police chief.
But most women in business are less well-known. Ninety percent of women-owned
ventures are classified as small businesses, and that’s certainly the case in this area.
The Small Business Administration (SBA) has labeled October as National Women in
Small Business Month. To mark the occasion, the News-Times is highlighting not only
local women who, like Maggie Pike and Becky Jo Saxe, own their local businesses but
also women who play other key roles in our economy.
