WILLAMETTE FALLS
FESTIVAL
13
By JIM AUSTIN
Looking for a fun and active way to
kick-start your Sunday? Sign up for the
Willamette Falls Festival 5k Fun Run and
Fun-athlon (run/ride/paddle) October 6.
Lace up your running shoes for a 5k Fun
Run, hop on your bike for a 16k ride, and
follow up with a 3k shore-to-shore
paddle. You should be done in
time for Sunday brunch, and
you’ll have a good reason to
say “go ahead, make it the
tall stack of pancakes.”
Check-in and registration opens at
7:15 a.m. at Oregon City’s Clackamette
Park. The 5k Fun Run starts at 8:30 a.m.
The route takes runners under, and then
over, the Dr. John McLouglin/99E Bridge
into Gladstone, hugs the Clackamas River
via paths and side streets, continues over
the Clackamas River at the High Rocks
footbridge and circles back to Clacka-
mette Park on the Clackamas River Trail.
In addition to the 5K Fun Run, the full-
on
Fun-athlon
adds a riverside bike ride
through West Linn and splashes down
with a round-trip paddle to the base of the
historic Willamette Locks.
The cycling route brings riders into
downtown Oregon City, over the Arch
Bridge, out Willamette Falls Drive to Fields
Bridge Park in West Linn, and back to the
starting point via the same route. The re-
turn ride offers pleasant views of the Wil-
lamette River and the Canemah Bluff.
The final leg of this non-competitive
event includes a paddle from the shore of
Clackamette Park and a short cross-river
course to the base of the historic Locks on
the river’s west side before returning to
Clackamette Park. Back on land, trade
some high-fives and get ready for your
fourth leg, brunch!
If pancakes sound like a good way to re-
place those calories you’ve burned off, and
you’re done in time, join the Cascade Pa-
cific Council of Boy Scouts for their Pan-
cake Breakfast, which will be held under
Willamette Falls Festival’s main pavilion
tent at the Blue Heron Mill site from 8 a.m.
to 11 a.m. Now there’s some extra motiva-
tion to make you kick a little faster and dig
your paddle a little deeper!
The online registration deadline for the
5K Fun Run and Fun-athlon with a guaran-
tee of an event tee shirt is Sept. 25. A lim-
ited assortment of shirts will be available
on a first-come, first-served basis for those
who register after Sept. 25.
Thank you to our Fun Run sponsors and
partners: East Side Athletic Club, First
City Cycles, eNRG Kayaking and Metro
