his month, Crown Carpets in Tigard
is celebrating 50 years in business,
thanks in part to strong customer
service and a desire to provide value
to the consumer.
It’s a business that has strong family ties.
Doug Lepper, owner
of the Main Street
business,
said
his
father, W.W. “Bill”
Lepper, was founder
of the business. Crown
Carpets started in a
small shop in Gresham
in October 1963.
“He was, at the time,
the only floor-covering
dealer in east county,”
Lepper recalled. “The next closest dealer was
at 20th and Northeast Broadway (by Lloyd
Center), a great distance away.”
For the first 30 years (approximately) of
Crown’s existence, Lepper’s mother, Dorothy,
was the head bookkeeper. “We lost her in 1993.
She worked right up until about the time she
left us,” Lepper said.
These days, Lepper’s brother-in-law, David
Kempenich, is the operations manager at
Crown Carpets in Gresham. Lepper’s sister,
Debra, is the company vice president and
oversees accounting, advertising and human
resources.
Lepper was a young kid when he was first
exposed to the business. “My first experience in
the carpet industry was going out to jobs with
my father when I was about 6. So I came up kind
of watching carpet being installed,” Lepper
said. At age 10, Lepper worked the shop floor,
sweeping and cleaning.
“I continue to work, because I find joy in it,”
Lepper said. “My kids are grown and gone, and
I don’t knowwhat else I would do.”
