LAKE OSWEGO REVIEW

A season ends, learning begins
A
lthough it’s still offi-
cially summer, we can
already feel the temper-
ature dropping during
early evening strolls, and the sun
isn’t beating us out of bed in the
morning any more either. Window
dressings are changing from swim-
suits and beach blankets to sweat-
ers and backpacks - a sure sign that
the lazy days of summer are coming
to an end and our (over?) scheduled
lives are returning. And parents
everywhere are eagerly awaiting the
first day of school! So what better
time than now to dedicate an issue
of LO to all things back-to-school?
For our cover story, Jillian Daley went straight
to the top and interviewed Lake Oswego’s two high
school principals, Cindy Schubert (Lake Oswego)
and Jennifer Schiele (Lakeridge). It’s interesting to
read about their personal backgrounds, challenges
and goals for their schools and students. Seems to
us that both schools are in very good - and caring -
hands. The story starts on page 4.
Every parent wants their children to succeed in
school, so we thought we’d get some tips for a suc-
cessful school year from local educators and pro-
fessional tutors. See page 6 for some great ideas to
put in place now, no matter if you have a child just
starting kindergarten or a graduating senior.
Reading is a big part of our home life, and we’re
always seeking out new books to entice
our young bibliophiles with. Who knows
the world of children and young adult
books better than our local Lake Oswego
librarians? They have compiled a list
on page 11 of both old favorite and new
noteable books for kids from preschool
through high school.
What’s the best part of back-to-school?
The clothes shopping, of course! No one
knows this better than Sherry Dorn and
she shares her tips for best shopping
practices along with some too-cool-for-
school looks for the new year.
We all have favorite (or not) school
lunch memories, whether it’s the loving
notes your mom tucked into your lunchbox or the
warm yeast rolls served up at the cafeteria. Barb
Randall asked around and collected some favorite
memories on page 8 - as well as a delicious choco-
late chip cookie recipe that has us wishing Peggy
Dickerson packed our lunches every day!
Finally, learning new things isn’t just for the
young; it’s also for the young-at-heart. This month’s
calendar of events on page 12 has opportunities to
learn photography, meditation and naturescaping,
as well as some fun cultural happenings at Lake-
wood Center and Luscher Farms.
Enjoy the last days of summer and never stop
learning!
