November 9, 1906
President Theodore Roosevelt leaves for
a trip to Panama to inspect the construc-
tion progress of the Panama Canal.
December 26, 1906
The world’s first feature film, “The
Story of the Kelly Gang,” is released.
November 16, 1907
Indian Territory and Oklahoma Terri-
tory become Oklahoma and are admitted
as the 46th U.S. state.
September 12, 1908
Orville Wright flew his heavier-than-air
machine over Washington, D.C. for more
than 70 minutes.
July 24, 1908
Ground broken on the county fair-
grounds in Canby.
August 11, 1908
The city council grants M.J. Lee a fran-
chise for an electric lighting and power
plant.
September 31, 1908
Canby school opened Monday with 75
scholars in attendance. There are 20 schol-
ars in the principal’s department; 47 in the
intermediate department and 2 in the pri-
mary department. The session opens under
the most encouraging prospects of a suc-
cessful school year.
April 15 1909
Canby voters pass law barring cows
from roaming the downtown streets.
April 22, 1909
The Canby Canal Company has
finished its final survey which is now in
the hands of the engineer who is busily
engaged in classifying and preparing
estimates on cost of construction. As soon
as this work is completed water will
commence to flow and the new era for
Canby and surround country will have
begun.
