NEAHKAHNIE
MOUNTAIN BAND
e Neahkahnie Mountain Band performs
traditional bluegrass music, as well as folk,
old time and original songs with that
Americana roots sound. e group
members pass around the lead singer hat,
creating a nice variety in their sound. eir
performances are upbeat and wide
ranging, o ering a barn-burning banjo
instrumental one moment, followed by a
compelling traditional ballad or perhaps a
feel-good western tune. e group features
Ken Vigil on mandolin and guitar, Rich
Bayless on upright bass and autoharp,
Patty Spencer on banjo, and Dennis Zelmer
on guitar. You can always count on the
Neahkahnie Mountain Band for a toe-
tapping good time.
HOW LONG
JUG BAND
Inspired by the great jug bands of the
1920s and ’30s, the How Long Jug
Band plays traditional blues music
with a few ragtime and early jazz
tunes mixed in. But more than the
repertoire, a jug band is de ned by its
use of homemade instruments—
trading drums for a washboard,
trumpet for kazoo and tuba for jug—
along with an easygoing attitude
that’s a pleasure to see. Arlo Leach
plays guitar, kazoo and jug. He is a
Jug Band Hall of Fame inductee and
led the e orts to buy gravestones for
Will Shade and Joe and Charlie
McCoy. Sam Vogt plays mandolin and
guitar. He grew up playing traditional
Irish music and stumbled upon jug
band music via bluegrass. Giued
Lutge plays washboard and washtub
bass. She played drums with Cedro
Willie and occasionally plays with the
Pagan Jug Band. Nick McCann plays
harmonica, banjitar and baritone
ukulele. When he’s not playing, he
enjoys reading and writing about
American music and culture.
