The Madras Kiwanis Club
and the Jefferson County
Middle School Leadership
Class is teaming to conduct a
food drive in November.
Beginning Nov. 1, boxes will
be put out in several Madras
area business, and people are
urged to fill the boxes with
nonperishable food. All food
collected will be given to the
Jefferson County Food Bank.
Dan Phillips, of the Madras
Kiwanis, said any business that
would like a collection box at
their location may call him at
541-954-0362 to arrange for
delivery. Each box will have a
drive poster attached.
“We’re excited to be working
with the students on this
community project,” said
Phillips. “Other Madras service
groups are helping as well.”
Phillips said there was no
specific goal for the drive, other
than “filling the cupboards of
the food bank.”
Look for the boxes
throughout town in November,
and contribute what you can.
Madras product Jacoby
Ellsbury gave his army of
Jefferson County fans, and Red
Sox backers worldwide, plenty
of cheer about in October.
Ellsbury was key in both
playoff series victories for
Boston, over Tampa Bay then
Detroit, in pushing Boston to
its third World Series berth
since 2004. The Sox faced the
St. Louis Cardinals.
It was the last time the Sox
made the Series, in 2007, that
Ellsbury burst onto the national
scene. As a fall call-up from
the Minors, he played so well
that he replaced Coco Crisp in
centerfield. The Sox didn’t lose
in the playoffs once he became
a starter, including a sweep of
the Colorado Rockies in the
Series.
Days after this year’s World
Series concludes, Ellsbury will
continue to be one of Major
League Baseball’s biggest
stories. The 30-year-old
centerfielder is a free agent after
the season. A solid campaign in
2013, plus a good post season,
has experts predicting Ellsbury
may get a $100 million-plus,
multiyear contract, whether it
be from Boston or another
team.
A Veterans Day Parade will
be held at 2 p.m., Monday, Nov.
11, at Sahalee Park in Madras
to celebrate and honor local
military heroes.
Sponsored by American
Legion Post 125, the parade is
seeking more entries for the
parade. Everyone is welcome to
enter.
The theme will be
“Honoring Our Vets” and
entries will line up at 12:30
p.m., at Madras High School.
The parade will go down 10th
Street to B Street, then to the
park at Seventh Street.
To register, or for more
information, contact American
Legion Commander Rolly
Swearingen at 541-420-0981, or

at 541-475-2350.
