“The Tribal Member Art
Exhibit is a favorite every year,
as there are so many different
types of art submitted by
talented artists. You may admire
the intricate details of a beaded
item, the brush strokes of a
beautiful painting or the fine
weaving work, one stitch at a
time — all unique, one of a
kind pieces of art,” said Debbie
Stacona, museum development
officer.
Many of the art pieces are for
sale, but they need to remain
on display for the duration of
the exhibit. Everyone is invited
to stop by the Museum at
Warm Springs to see the
creative traditional and
contemporary works of art.
People are already registering
floats for the annual Christmas
Lights Parade, sponsored by the
Madras-Jefferson County
Chamber of Commerce.
This year’s theme is
“Heritage and Legends of
Christmas,” for the holiday
parade which will glitter
around Sahalee Park
starting at 6 p.m.,
Saturday, Dec. 7.
The event is especially
a thrill for children, who
love the traveling light
show and chance to spot
lighted snowmen,
reindeer, elves and Santa
Claus.
The evening begins
with the lighting of the
town Christmas tree and
singing of Christmas
carols at the park, just
before the parade.
Following the parade,
children are invited to
have their pictures taken
with Santa Claus at the nearby
Madras Bowl and Pizza.
Last year, there were over 30
lighted floats entered in the
parade. Trophies are given to
the top floats in the categories
of: best overall, best theme, best
lights, best business and best
nonbusiness individual.
To enter a float in the
parade, contact the chamber at
541-475-2350.
This fall is the third time in
a year that the Culver School
District has gone before voters
in an effort to get a bond levy
to replace an aging elementary
school and remodel the high
school and middle school.
The remodel will include
improvements in safety factors
and heating and electrical
systems. It will also add
classroom space in the middle
school.
This fall’s bond effort is for
$8.8 million. It comes on the
heels of last spring’s $9.1
million bond proposal, which
was defeated by just 60 votes.
Within the $8.8 million is
$950,000 to go toward paying
off half of the 14-ace land
purchase made in 2008. That
land purchase, done without a
districtwide vote by a previous
school administration, was
controversial and has
substantially contributed to the
two previous levy attempts
failing.
The other half of the cost of
the $1.9 million land purchase
will come through general fund
contributions. Early efforts had
full payment within the bond.
When the votes are counted
Nov. 5, Culver will see if the
third time is the charm.

The High Desert Community Theater group performed “Vaudeville Is My Home” this
fall at Culver High School. Started when a group of people did a play for Culver’s
Centennial in 2010, the theater group includes youth and adult performers. It has
evolved to where the group performs two plays a year.
