The city-owned Madras
course, Desert Peaks Golf
Course, is a geat place to be
on a fall day. It’s a relatively
forgiving course, itching to
provide a personal record,
certainly easy on the budget.
What’s more, it showcases
the Cascades. The nine-hole
Desert Peaks is located west
of the industrial park. Go
west on Cherry Lane on the
north end of Madras, south
on Mill Street, then west on

Crooked River Ranch is
one of the region’s favorite public courses. Get to the
Ranch via Lower Bridge Road, just north of Terre-
bonne. The 18-hole course is challenging but not over-
bearing. It’s also the lowest elevation among the area’s
courses, and therefore playable when many others are

Kah-Nee -Ta ’ s 18 -ho l e
course is indeed challenging,
and long one of the region’s
most respected. With the
Warm Springs River slicing
through it, the course will test
your skill, but the experience
is worth it. Follow signs from

practice your golf swing at
Willow Creek Driving Range,
which is located off McTag-
gart Road, in southeast
Madras.
Camping
Well known as a summer paradise, the Camp Sher-
man area, along the spectacular Metolius River, is a
haven for campers. Several campgrounds line the river,
but more are dispersed through the surrounding nation-
al forest. The southwestern section of the county also
features Suttle Lake, Jack Lake and a bevy of other
