region is famous for — and less — as
in less of a crowd to share it all with.
Here’s what north Central Oregon and Jefferson
County have to offer for a quick vacation itinerary:
Fly-fishing, or a guided whitewater trip, on the De-
schutes; camping choices ranging from remote timber-
land to one of Oregon’s most beautiful and popular
state parks; hiking trails from the deep woods to the
sage-covered buttes; a visit to a world-class Native
American museum, maybe followed by a visit with lady
luck at Central Oregon’s only casino.
This is Jefferson County, and this is just a start.
You won’t find bright lights or valet parking here, just
beautiful scenery and a wide variety of choices for fun.
Fishing and Floating
Fishing enthusiasts have been raving about the rivers
of Jefferson County since the early 1900s, before Jeffer-
son County was formed back in 1914. Fishermen from
Portland and elsewhere would take a train up the De-
schutes River Canyon to the small farming hamlets of
these parts just to fish the Deschutes, Metolius and
Crooked rivers.
Fly fishing on the Deschutes, the queen of the high
desert’s rivers, has been well chronicled, from novels to
