This 1,700 square-
foot daylight
basement with
under-house garage
was never used by
this family of four.
The dark, outdated
décor, low ceilings and maze of hallways
only added to its unpopularity. The goal
was to create an open, usable space that
reflected the family’s personality while
incorporating one-of-a-kind memorabilia
and reclaimed materials.
The new open floor plan called for
removing almost every wall, reworking
the ductwork to raise ceilings and
transforming the garage into a new guest
bedroom. The stunning 4-inch white oak
floor, new kitchenette, updated bathroom
with colorful glass tile and whimsical
living areas give this space a warm, livable
feel.
The homeowners’ love of the Portland
Trailblazers and the Seattle Mariners is
displayed in the new ping pong room.
Their love of travel was incorporated into
the family room area with a large wall
map and custom art of the children from
a recent trip to Spain. The removable
FLOR carpet tiles and kid-friendly sofa
were used in the family room and a new
kitchenette houses a beverage cooler,
microwave drawer and sink for easy
clean-up. The entertainment center keeps
everything organized behind doors
including DVDs, board games, gaming
storage and media components. “Who
wouldn’t want to be here all of the time? It
has everything you would ever want as a
kid,” said our homeowners. They couldn’t
be happier with their newly reclaimed
square footage. Now, the “kids can just
be kids” while mom listens to them laugh
and play from upstairs.This basement
remodel is the perfect example of skillful,
sustainable design.
