About a year after
purchasing their
home, our clients
realized they simply
needed more space.
Their floor plan had
seemed big enough
when they first bought the house, but
they soon realized they wanted to add
a sewing and craft space. We are proud
to say they heard about SLS from friends
whose home we built more than 20 years
ago!
Working together, we developed
a vision for our clients’ home that fit
seamlessly within its current design,
adding space but preserving their lot
by building up instead of out. They
emphasized blending the addition with
original construction so it didn’t look like a
remodel, and we approached their project
with this priority in mind.
One challenge, common in second-floor
additions, was how to access the added
upstairs space. We had to thoughtfully
consider where to put stairs to avoid
cramming into, or using up, precious
existing floor area. SLS developed a plan
that repurposed space from an existing,
oversized laundry room to create an
attractive staircase that blends with
the home’s original design, and we still
preserved an efficient, compact laundry
space adjacent to the garage.
By thinking ahead and installing egress-
sized windows and automated skylights,
SLS left a door open for their added
space to one day serve as an additional
bedroom. We created an additional 500
square feet of flexible living space with
options for the future while immediately
adding much-needed storage space, and
fulfilling the desire for a beautiful sewing
and craft room.
