As the original
owners of this 1976
house, the customers
had decided that
they would like to
stay in their home
for as long as
possible. They had created an exceptional
landscape over the years and had a vision
to remodel their home so that it was as
warm and inviting as its surroundings.
Their ideas included a larger kitchen and
great room, as well as a secluded, but
included, living room that gave them
and their guests an opportunity to relax
and escape. They also
required that we include
some universal design components that
included a wheelchair ramp, widened
doorways and a roll-in shower.
With these requirements in mind, we
began our design and construction work.
We completely removed the existing
garage. In its place, we added a beautifully
vaulted kitchen/great room. The adjacent
dining area and formal living room
accomplished their desire to have a cozy
and inviting space to retire to.
We added a laundry/exercise room
that connects the kitchen/great room
area to the new garage and incorporated
their need for ramp access to the main
home. Throughout the body of the
existing house, we enlarged all bedroom
doorways to allow for eventual wheelchair
access. We also enlarged the master suite.
This gave us the opportunity to create a
universally designed master bathroom
that will accommodate their aging-in-
place needs.
Additionally, we looked for
opportunities for the use of passive solar
with windows capturing views of the
beautiful landscaping that the customers
had developed over the years. We are
excited to show this wonderful home to
all of our new friends and neighbors in
and around Portland. Please come, tour
and witness the changes that were made.
