Festival of the Arts 2013
W
hen you come to the
Lake Oswego Festival
of the Arts, part of
what you’ll see is the largest un-
juried show in the Pacific North-
west. The Open Show displays
more than 1,000 pieces of individ-
ual creativity.
As you walk into the large tent
pavilion at the Lakewood Center
youwill encounter art of all kinds.
There is something for everyone.
You’ll see life-sized whales, realis-
tic portraits, abstract landscapes
and that one piece that makes
you smile every time you look
at it. The best part is that it is all
for sale and ready for that perfect
spot in your home or cabin.
This year an added component
is a special section dedicated to
everything related to food. This
area is designated as the Field
to Feast exhibit to celebrate the
50th anniversary. There will be
a specific gallery within the tent
for all art that depicts anything to
do with food—growing, creating,
serving or eating. Be prepared for
a visual feast of everything from
fiber art to monumental sculp-
ture. It too is unjuried like all of
the other work in the Open Show.
Longtime curator Jan Rim-
erman loves the challenge. As
the art is registered on Father’s
Day she greets the artists as
she would longtime friends and
checks up on what they are
bringing into the show this year.
“It’s so exciting to see the indi-
vidual artists grow and stretch
throughout their art careers,”
she said. “Some of these careers
began right here at the Festival.
In fact, works by both profes-
sional artists and first-time ex-
hibitors hang side by side in this
one show.”
“The Open Show is a testament
to the diversity, imagination and
amazing talent of the artists. It
is encouraging to me that every-
one can exhibit their inner artist,
hobbyist to professional, and the
result is awe inspiring,” saidAmy
Markovitz, a volunteer at the Fes-
tival for 15 years.
Rimerman’s job is to allow
each piece to shine indepen-
dently while being exhibited in
