hether you’re shopping for
grade schoolers, ‘tweens or
teens, local stores are stocked
full of gifts sure to strike their
fancies and stoke their imaginations. If
you’d prefer to give the youngsters in your
life an experience, yoga studios and cooking
schools offer classes to build their skills and
teach them new art forms.

“Wildwood,” “Under Wildwood”
($22.50 for both)
Inspired by our own Forest Park, local au-
thor — and Decemberists frontman — Colin
Meloy penned this series about the adven-
tures of a girl and her brother in a mystical
secret wilderness kingdom, with illustrations
by wife Carson Ellis. In anticipation of the
third installment, “Wildwood Imperium,” due
out next year, give the young reader in your
life the gift of escape — even if it is to a world
based almost entirely on their beautiful sur-
roundings. Available at Powell’s Books at Ce-
dar Hills Crossing (powells.com).
Creatology 3D Foam Kits
Taking model-building to the next level, this
line of do-it-yourself, soft material kits invites
young hands to assemble their own structures
and scenes — be it a castle, rustic camp cabin,
fantasy tree house, camping forest scene or
candy-colored castle. Prices vary. Available at
Michaels stores in Tualatin, Beaverton.
Yoga classes
It’s never too early to learn the art of relax-
ation. Imagine Yoga Studio in Lake Oswego
offers beginning yoga classes for the smaller
set. Parents are encouraged to participate as
certified instructors teach breathing, relax-
ation and a variety of yoga poses, in classes
broken up into two groups: ages 3 to 6 and 5
to 12. $65 to $75 for a 6-week session, $12 to
$14 to drop in. (imagineyogastudio.com)
Alex Sew Fun Sewing Machine ($62.69)
The DIY movement is in full swing! Give
the little craftsperson in your life a head start
with a machine that’s just their size. With two

presser foot, new sears can learn the basics
with ease. Materials are included for a first
project. Available at Frog Pond Toys in Lake
Oswego. (frogpondtoys.com)
MEEP! X2 tablet ($150)
Tualatin’s own Oregon Scientific recently
released its second generation of a tablet for
young tech enthusiasts. With wireless capa-
bilities, tons of educational apps and remote
parental controls, students can have their
own tablet experience in more durable form.
Available at Toys “R” Us and online. (oregon-

LEGO custom models
LEGOs have come quite a way since its ear-
liest days and simple colorful building blocks.
Now, intricate models based on popular mov-
ies dominate the market, and Bricks and
Minifigs in Beaverton carries some of the
most popular sets. But the store also boasts
table after table of assorted “classic” blocks
that can be bought in bulk, allowing kids to
customize their own projects. Perhaps a trip
to the tables is in order? (bricksandminifigs.

The Lake Oswego gourmand’s supply store
and food events organizer loves to get kids in
the kitchen! Throughout the year, it offers
classes to introduce children and teens to
baking and the fine art of cuisine. (ingood-
