“I recently re-read, again, “The Leadership Secrets of
Colin Powell” by Oren Harai. General Powell was called
by Newsweek, “the most respected figure in American
public life.” For me, leading the great men and women of
the Gresham Police Department requires me to always be
looking for the best way to get things done through them.
“The book provides no-nonsense leadership solutions
that Powell has used throughout his military career and
while in the state department. The book is highlighted by
sayings Powell has used to describe aspects of leadership
when addressing certain issues. One of my favorites is
when Powell is talking about change in an organiza-
tion and how it will make some people mad. He says,
“Let’s engender a climate of let’s-try-it experimentation,
demand innovative initiatives from people and reward
performance, and yes, along the way, it is going to upset
some people.”
“The book was extremely well written and targets
some of the most critical and necessary aspects of leader-
ship. It is definitely a book that I will dust off and read
again and again.”

What Gresham’s bibliophiles and bookworms are reading
“’Reagan on Leadership,’ by James M. Strock, is an analysis of how
Ronald Reagan transformed himself, then our nation and ultimately, the
world. The author emphasizes that Reagan’s leadership and management
style, while original in some aspects and perhaps singular in a few, has
components that can be isolated, studied and applied by others.
“Reagan crafted a very compelling, consistent and simple vision.
In 1980, he wrote, “At the heart of our message should be five simple,
familiar words: family, work, neighborhood, freedom, peace.” Reagan
would identify and challenge any threat to the principles encompassed
by his vision. This became his life journey. Colin Powell spoke of the
paradox in Reagan’s warmth and detachment when he said Reagan could
forge close relationships, then bend them, or even discard them, in order
to advance his fundamental goals. His respect for and protection of
American values was his highest priority.
“Reagan was a brilliant student of leadership and exuded classic
American optimism. Having inherited a nation with a sense of hope-
lessness — with hostages still in Iran, a depressed economy, hostile
American-Soviet relations, he was crystal clear that he meant it when he
predicted sunnier days in his inauguration speech.
“If you are inspired and informed by his example to better serve
others, to help others find and fulfill their callings, then you too will be
giving life to that legacy.”
