ere are still a few beautiful days le in the
neighborhood to take in the explosive color pal-
ette Mother Nature gives up before she drives us
inside for a long winter’s nap.
While it may seem most of us are thinking
about laying in supplies for a visit by the ghosts,
goblins and things that go bump in the night,
you don’t want to miss the last vestiges of the go-
outside-and-play weather.
Nowhere this time of year is the gi of color
more stunning than the Columbia River Gorge.
You can indulge in a leisurely drive along the his-
toric highway, under an amber-colored canopy
of leaves, and toss a blanket on the ground for
a picnic at Benson Lake. Ward o the chill of the
crisp fall air with a thermos of hot cider and envy
the Canadian Geese jumping ship for warmer
climes.
But don’t by-pass Troutdale as you head east.
Stop for lunch, browse among the eclectic array
of shops for unique gi s (yes, Christmas is com-
ing sooner than we’d like) or learn about the city’s
founding family at the Harlow House.
In this month’s issue of East County Lead-
er, we will show you just a couple reasons why
Troutdale truly is the Gateway to the Gorge.
*
Troutdale holds a very special place in the
heart of its mayor, Doug Daoust. A longtime
community advocate and volunteer, Daoust is
known for his gentle leadership and commit-
ment to the city he calls ‘home.’ Learn about his
most memorable community accomplishment
and why preserving Troutdale’s small town feel-
ing is important to him.

Martin Tang, owner of Taste of Village, has
been dishing up our favorites in Chinese-Amer-
ican cuisine for 11 years. See why Tang places a
high priority on customer service, whether din-
ers are seated in his homey restaurant or breez-
ing in for cartons of take-out. And just in time
for the cooler weather, Tang shares his recipe for
Egg Flower Soup.
But don’t hunker down for winter just yet.
Join volunteers with the Gresham History Mu-
seum for a tour of downtown historic sites or
stop by the museum for a story corner hosted
by Gresham Mayor Shane Bemis. And with the
holidays just around the corner, take that drive
up the Gorge and enjoy a full anksgiving Buf-
fet at the Columbia Gorge Hotel. ey won’t even
make you wash the dishes!
Until next time — Anne Endicott
